Overview

Senior Living Residences (“SLR”) is seeking a full time Director of Compass Memory Support Programming to support Forestdale Park, a brand new assisted living and memory support community in Malden, Massachusetts. Forestdale Park is a Volunteers of America Massachusetts Senior Community expected to open in February of 2018. This position would be essential in preparing the community for a successful opening and will have an expected start date in November 2017. Compass Memory Support is a non-pharmacological, social model of care for persons with dementia. It is a unique program, affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center, that treats the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia by putting cutting-edge research into action through social engagement, lifelong learning, exercise, the arts, and nutrition.

Responsibilities

Programming and Service Plan Delivery:

  • Manage the implementation of the Compass objectives, policies and procedures, upholding the integrity of SLR innovations, company-wide initiatives and other best practices
  • Develop, coordinate and implement programs and services for residents with cognitive impairment; provide a therapeutic environment in the resident’s personal and congregate areas, compensating for cognitive, sensory and physical impairments, that maintains each resident’s highest level of physical, social and psychological well-being
  • Develop and implement daily therapeutic programming, including parallel programming, for residents from morning through late evening, with at least one distinct program each hour
  • Plan regularly scheduled outings for residents; drive the van and/or car to take residents on shopping trips, to visit museums, restaurants, community events, etc; coordinate with Resident Care Director (RCD) and other department heads to schedule additional staff for outings, as necessary.
  • Create and post the monthly calendar of programs
  • Develop an individualized plan of therapeutic activities and behavioral issue interventions for each resident, and document on each resident’s service plans his/her individual preferences and level of interest/involvement in particular activity programs
  • Assure delivery of service for each resident as specified in their resident care service plan; develop a resource file to assist in meeting the residents’ and families’ needs
  • Prepare and provide Executive Director (ED) with records and reports regarding the program’s budget and progress toward stated goals

Management and Training/Education Duties:

  • Establish and implement a staffing plan to accomplish stated objectives in standards of the Compass Memory Support Neighborhood
  • Participate in the hiring, scheduling, onboarding, ongoing training, and supervising of Resident Care Associates in their care duties, as well as their participation in therapeutic and activity programs for residents
  • Supervise volunteer services
  • Put procedures in place to ensure that programming is ongoing 7 days a week, with programs and supplies planned ahead
  • In combination with the community management team, the Compass Program Director participates General Orientation and leads the approved dementia training for all new associates
  • Provide in-service educational trainings and continuing education for associates, family members and volunteers regarding the Alzheimer’s disease process, behaviors, techniques and approaches
  • Act as a liaison facilitating communication between the Compass, family members and community. Advocate for the residents’ rights and other care issues, obtaining basic needs such as clothing and personal items when the family is unable to do so
  • Coordinate the Neighborhood Resident Council and Resident Family Meetings
  • Host a monthly Support Group, open to Compass families and the general public; serve as coordinator of the Support Group setting agendas and inviting speakers
  • Create joint programs with local community resources, such as YMCA's, libraries and schools, that Compass residents can be a part of

Assistance with Marketing, Community Events and Public Education Efforts:

  • Clearly articulate to visitors and potential residents what the community offers and why our organization, specifically Compass Memory Support, is unique
  • Assist with marketing the Compass MSN’s services to potential residents and their families, doctors, hospital discharge planners and community agencies by conducting tours and outreach, as needed, and providing detailed information about the Compass Program
  • Become a recognized expert and resource relating to dementia care and Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Actively work with various department managers to support the team effort in planning and hosting community special events, holidays and marketing functions
  • Coordinate with the ED and Director of Building & Grounds to ensure that the Compass MSN is “tour ready” at all times; and immediately report any maintenance issues that need to be addressed

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of senior healthcare experience. Professional licensure in a related healthcare field preferred (recreational or occupational therapist, nursing or social work) 
  • Must be a Certified Dementia Practitioner or attain such certification within six months after assuming the position (training/certification costs will be covered by the community); must keep up to date on renewals for this certification
  • Must be a certified Alzheimer’s Association support group leader or attain the certification promptly after hire
  • Acute sense of responsibility and moral integrity. Sincere desire to work with cognitively impaired residents and ability to deal with residents under all conditions. Compassion and patience essential. Level-headed and calm in emergencies
  • Leadership skills with the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment and promote a culture of teamwork, cooperation, enthusiasm, customer service, and an atmosphere conducive to growth
  • Strong customer relations skills with the ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively (written and oral) 
  • Knowledge of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and related dementias, stages of AD, and behavior management techniques for AD
  • Must be comfortable with computer and digital technology and be willing to become proficient in the systems SLR uses to communicate with families and conduct presentations in the community and offsite
  • Must be physically able to handle some lifting of supplies and equipment, and moving of furniture, including pulling up to 25 pounds; to implement recreational activities for residents; and to escort and/or assist residents, as needed, and with the support of coworkers, as assigned
